Winter Wine Club Release - Malbec and Muscat
Our 2016 Muscat started a few miles North of us at Bellpine Vineyard. This is our second release of
Muscat in a row following up our popular 2015 Muscat. What's unique about our Muscat is that it's made in an off dry style rather than the normal sweet style. We balance what little acid this wine has to offer with just a touch of residual sugar that leaves the educated wine drinker with a smile on their face. It's different...very different from most Early Muscat's one might taste.
This wine has a nose of peaches and apricots, but when tasted is decidedly citrus with strong flavors up front of pineapple and orange peel. The finish is very light, yet crispy with a faint reminder of a Sauvignon Blanc on the finish. Muscat is like a little secret Oregon still carries on from it's past. It used to be planted in the same numbers as Pinot Gris when the industry was first starting here, but it is now primarily thought of as a sweet or semi-sweet apertif, or unusual varietal of the past.
Our 2015 Malbec started a bit further up North in the Red Mountain Sub-AVA of Washington's Columbia Valley AVA. We have worked with a few different vineyards in that area to procure Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah as well as this fine Malbec. This particular Malbec was picked in a little early to make sure the wine made with the grapes would have a strong white pepper value that our winemaker has always enjoyed about Malbecs from this area.
We aged this wine in Hungarian and French oak barrels for 18 months while watching and waiting as the wine developed into it's full potential. This Malbec brings you sutble notes of oak, white pepper, and licorice on the nose. When tasted, the flavor of white pepper carries on a fruit forward experience of blueberries and pomegranate with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar for several years as it will continue to mature and improve with bottle age.
I hope that these wines will please your palate and help bring in the new year!
